When enjoyment becomes an addiction

Do you often have the feeling you are losing control of your gambling? If so, you are like hundreds of thousands of other people in Germany. For them, slot machines or casino games, sports betting, poker or lotteries are no longer what they are for most people: a purely recreational pursuit. For them, fun has become an addiction. Hundreds of thousands of people who only stop gambling when they have run out of money. And who keep on betting even when they lose, so as to recoup the money they have already lost. Anyone caught in this vicious circle of a gambling problem can hardly think of anything other than carrying on gambling. Financial problems are an inevitability. The stakes become higher, and often the gambling gets riskier and riskier. The result is desperation and feelings of guilt. Work, friends and family are left behind, and the gambler becomes increasingly marginalised.
